Some things don’t make sense. By now, you have seen the devastation and the destruction that has once again beset Haiti. The images are chilling. Homes destroyed. Lives shattered. Death is everywhere. News reports of bodies of tiny children piled next to schools. Corpses of women lay on the street as flies begin to gather. Bodies of men covered with plastic tarps or cotton sheets tell the story of lives extinguished and potential snuffed out. Why did this happen? Hadn’t Haiti suffered enough? Years of dictatorship, political violence and mounting debt has taken its toll. While AIDS, poverty, no oil, a voodoo faith and its “blackness” made it invisible to its Western neighbors. Why would a loving, gracious God allow something like this to occur? I wish had the answer.
Tonight as I write this blog, the words of Psalm 102 came to mind. Writing from a bed of affliction, the Psalmist wrote, “Hear my prayer, O Lord; let my cry come to you. Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress. Incline your ear to me; answer me speedily in the day when I call.” (Psalm 102:1-2) But despite the Psalmist afflictions, the Psalmist continues by saying “For the Lord will build up Zion; he will appear in his glory. He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and will not despise their prayer.” (Psalm 102:16-17) God heard that prayer. God will hear Haiti’s prayer.
Pray with me for Haiti and Her People.
